'Friendly Bacteria' not so friendly, says Hampshire Detective Inspector 7/9/99 14:53

A well-known manufacturer of live yogurts has been forced to withdraw over 10000 items of stock from stores country wide after the fourth mugging in two weeks.

"At first we just thought the yogurts were being stolen. However, when a shop owner was found in a very serious condition last Friday night, with his entire stock missing, and the window broken from the inside, we were forced to look into other possibilities", said Detective Inspector Clarence of Hampshire Police Force yesterday evening.

"After speaking to all of the victims so far, we discovered that the descriptions of their assailant were all similar. The current description we have is white, approximately 4 inches tall, with a distinguishing label on their stomach reading 'It's jam-packed full of friendly bacteria'. There may also be more than one assailant. If you see any yogurt of this description, please do not attempt to approach or engage them, and simply contact the police immediately." The shopkeeper is currently recovering in hospital, but is said to be in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, the company who make the product have been recalling stocks from supermarkets worldwide. A spokesman for the company said "This is simply a precaution - we still don't know if our product is to blame for these recent grusome attacks, but until the attacker or attackers have been apprehended, we are recalling our products for the peace of mind of the public".

"We simply can't take any chances with either the safety of our customers or our employees." Said a spokeswoman for Asad Supermarket Group. "Currently, the finger points to these products, and as a result, we have removed all of the product from our shelves, and we are asking any customers who purchased any in the last month to return them to the shop for safe destruction. Please to not simply discard them."

The Non-profit-making organisation 'People Against Germs And other Nasty Substances' campaign against using bacteria in foods. "This sort of thing was predicted years ago. It's been proved time and time again in independent tests, that if these sorts of product are left in isolation for too long, they simply go bad. There is simply no such think as so-called 'friendly bacteria'," a spokeswoman was quoted as saying.

A tub of 'I can't Believe It's Not LARD' is currently being held by police for questioning, but due to it's sell-by date, will not be held for more than 24 hours.
