Q: What's the only thing worse than paying taxes?

A: The fact that you can't figure them out.

We have designed this area to assist you with the ugly (and frightening) subject of Taxation.

Notwithstanding our objective of trying to help out in this area, you should not take us as The Last Word or The Great Authority on this subject. We can, and will, make mistakes.

Why? Because the tax laws created by our Great and Wise legislators are convoluted and difficult to navigate. Many of the same people who write and pass these laws have to hire their own tax advisors just to figure them out. Kinda scary, isn't it?

Every year Money Magazine runs a contest where they give a tax problem to scads of different CPAs. Rarely do any two of them come up with the same answer. Taxes may be many things, but "easy" is not one of them, even for the pros.

Accordingly, no assurance is given by the Motley Fool that our information is comprehensive and accurate in its coverage. We emphatically state that it is not.

Information provided by the Motley Fool should not be relied upon as a substitute for independent research to original sources of authority. The Motley Fool does not render legal, accounting, tax, or other professional advice. If legal, tax, or other expert assistance is required, the services of a competent professional must be sought.

This forum is not a substitute for obtaining professional tax or legal advice.

In other words, if you get audited, don't blame us.

And if you have the kinds of problems that inspire nausea every April, cause you to pull your hair out and howl at the moon, simply because the laws are too complicated for any mere mortal to figure out, you should tell the folks in Washington. After all, they are there because we hired them to do a job.
