 BM and Acer America Corp. are preparing notebooks for users who travel light. Both will offer systems weighing about 4 pounds, depending on configuration.Next week, IBM will unveil the ThinkPad 570, which will support a choice of Pentium II chips up to 366 MHz and 64 Mbytes of memory, hard drives to 6.4 Gbytes, and screens up to 13.3 inches. A removable "slice" base that attaches to the bottom lets users add digital versatile disk and CD-ROM drives, as well as batteries and extra hard drives. The body of the notebook will replicate the ports on the slice base, so users won't need to travel with that option to hook up peripherals. Without the base and with a smaller screen, the ThinkPad 570 will weigh 3.9 pounds. Pricing isn't available. Acer's TravelMate 330 starts at $1,999 with a 300-MHz Pentium II processor, a 12.1-inch TFT display, 32 Mbytes of memory, and a 4.8-Gbyte hard drive. A high-performance model includes a 366-MHz Pentium II, 64 Mbytes of memory, and a 6-Gbyte hard drive for $2,699. Both models weigh 4.1 pounds with full-size keyboards and a magnesium-alloy chassis. Included in the price of each is a single external box that packages a floppy and CD-ROM drive; the box connects to a port on the notebook. The new models are aimed mainly at small to midsize businesses, but larger companies can buy them through their resellers, says Larry McCain, Acer mobile systems product manager. Both models are compliant with Desktop Management Interface and wired for management standards.
