  • Most of pcOrder.com Inc.'s $22 million in revenue comes from selling E-commerce software and services to the computer reseller channel, but the company is increasing its efforts to lure computer manufacturers.

SGI (formerly Silicon Graphics Inc.) is the latest systems maker to use pcOrder.com's CommerceStation suite to power a Web site for its resellers and later large business clients. Other manufacturers using pcOrder.com include Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, and IBM.

"We want to be the infrastructure behind the industry's powerful brands," says pcOrder.com founder and president Christy Jones.

Christy JonesPhoto by Bill Kennedy SGI plans to sell its new Windows NT-based 320 and 540 workstations and 1600SW flat-panel displays online to its resellers this summer and directly to large business clients later. "We can save some research and development costs by not building proprietary applications," says Keith Watson, executive VP of sales and marketing at SGI.

Last week, pcOrder.com launched ContentSource, a subscription product-comparison database for Web portals. The data service contains information on 100,000 products from more than 1,000 manufacturers. The first ContentSource licensee is Inktomi Corp., which will incorporate comparison-shopping data into the Inktomi Shopping Engine used by InfoSeek, NBC's Snap, and other portals. Says Jones, "There will be a lot of different buying models that will emerge on the Web that we'll have to support."
