XML in the Java^TM Platform

In March 1999, Sun announced efforts to develop a Java^TM standard extension for XML (see "Sun Unveils XML Technology Support in the Java Platform.") Through the Java Community Process, the XML standard extension will be an industry-developed standard Java API providing essential XML features for developing XML-oriented services and applications.

The Java Specification Request, which outlines the XML standard extension proposal, is currently available at the Java Developer Connection's Java Community Process Web site.

Sun has outlined the initial version of the XML SE to include event-based parsing for XML based on SAX 1.0, an optional basic in-memory representation of XML data based on W3C DOM Level 1 Core, basic APIs to print the XML data, and support for XML Namespaces.

The early-access releases of Java extension for XML will be available on the the JDC's Java Community Process Web site.

Java^TM Technology and XML

XML is an essential component in the Java^TM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition and will be supported throughout the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition as a means for enabling business-to-business information interchange using XML.

For robust, synchronous data messaging, Enterprise JavaBeans^TM (EJB) can be used to create a business service object, and related XML content can be sent over the wire using JavaServer Pages^TM technology . Currently, JavaServer Pages can be used to generate and consume XML between n-tier servers or between server and client.

Java Messaging Service provides a means for asynchonous XML data messaging. In addition, Enterprise JavaBeans uses XML to describe its deployment properties, giving Enterprise JavaBeans data portability in addition to its code portability.
