WiredX is an X Window System server,
written in pure JavaTM.
WiredX enables you to access UNIX/X applications from all web
browsers with Java Plug-in and it will be available at
WiredX.Net.
At present, its "beta" and "Lite" versions are provided
for non-commercial/commercial use with no fee at
WiredX.Net.
Its downloadable versions are also available
here.
Features
- WiredX is written in pure Java.
Its byte-codes measure about 200KBytes in JAR format.
- WiredX depends on Java2(JDK1.2).
WiredX-Lite, which depends on JDK 1.1.* and Swing 1.0.*,
is also available. We have also provided
JXPie,
which runs on PersonalJavaTM.
- WiredX accepts X window protocols(X11R6.3), directly.
- WiredX doesn't need a proxy program.
Some Javanized X servers have existed already.
They, however, need a proxy program, which translates X protocols to
their own proprietary protocols.
- The Copy & Paste operate between WiredX and native window system are supported.
- XDMCP, REXEC has been supported.
- Built-in screen savers has been supported.
Some sample screen savers, which lists headlines of
Segfault.org,
Linux Today,
slashdot.org and
freshmeat.net are
available.
Requirements
- Java Plug-in 1.1.1, 1.1.2 or 1.2, and
- a web browser, which supports Java Plug-in,
for example Netscape Navigator.
We have confirmed that WiredX has run on Windows95/98/NT with
the Netscape Navigator and the Internet Explorer.
If you succeed in running WiredX on other platforms; Solaris, Mac,
please notify us.
Current Status
WiredX is still under development and we are continuing
our efforts to improve it.
At present, we have already released a Release Candidate of 1.0.
For this release,
we have received valuable comments from beta testers and
some people pointed out that "this X server eats many memories!!".
We have also recognized this fact and
we had thought that it would not be so serious
problem on Celeron machines with 64M byte memories.
Anyway, we decided to postpone the release of 1.0 and
fix this problem.
Currently, we are rewriting DDX(Device Dependent)
part completely(in our context, DDX part means a chunk of code which
operates AWT objects) and it is provided here
and WiredX.Net.
