Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to visit Koko, Michael, and Ndume at The Gorilla Foundation/Koko.org?

While we would love to allow our supporters to meet each of our gorillas, The Gorilla Foundation/Koko.org is not open to the public for visits. The presence of strangers on our grounds deeply upsets our male gorillas and we try to keep their environment as stress-free as possible. Although we realize there is no substitute for a face-to-face visit, you can enjoy Koko in action on video. Several excellent video programs are currently available and can be found at your local library. You might also visit some of Koko's relatives at her birthplace, the San Francisco Zoo. Mkubwa, her brother, and Shango, her nephew, are currently on exhibit there.

Where can I see a copy of the transcript of Koko's Earth Day online chat session?

A complete transcript of Koko's chat session presented by America Online in April 1998 can be found on our website at:

What is the status of the gorilla preserve in Maui?

The Gorilla Foundation/Koko.org is establishing a unique preserve for endangered gorillas on west Maui, Hawaii, where the tropical climate will be much more suitable for the gorillas than our present location in Northern California. We are developing a large, secluded sanctuary on 70 acres and the gorilla families will spend their days socializing, napping in the sun, playing, foraging through edible vegetation, communicating, reproducing and raising their children.

Updates regarding the preserve are available at our website at:
