[Skamm] get bootnet.img
[Skamm] this is in the images
directory whereever you are gettin Red Hat Linux from.
[Skamm] don't get it from
Red Hat. too slow a connectionn. :) get rawrite from
the dosutils directory.
[Skamm] this is a dos program
that will write the bootnet.img file to a floppy.
[Skamm] it will write it
one byte at a time and it really sensitive to marginal
floppies.
[Skamm] if this is a laptop,
you will need the supplemental or pcmcia.img images
too.
[Skamm]oh, rawrite will give
you the format for the command when you try to run
it.
[Skamm] I think it is rawrite
location_of_image drive (rawrite c:\blah\bootnet.img
a:)
[Skamm] next, make sure that
you have the full URL to the start of the linux tree
on your ftp mirror.
[Skamm] this is going to
be in the i386 dir I think.
[Sensei](for anyone not
following) bootnet.img is neccessary if you want to
install via FTP hence bootnet...boot over the net.
[Skamm] for metalab, it would
be ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/distributions/redhat/current/i386/
[Skamm] boot.img is for cd
installs.
[Skamm] bootnet is for nfs
and ftp installs.
[Skamm] ok, now you should
put your newly built bootnet.img floppy in your drive,
and reboot.
[Skamm] it will load the
kernel, and then ask you a couple questions, like
language and stuff.
[Skamm] I am assuming that
you have a real internet connection. Like Ethernet,
cable, dsl, and that it works with linux.
[Skamm] when you tell it
that you are going to do an FTP install, it will ask
for your network info. Like IP, gateway, DNS, and
the url.
[Skamm] The system will then
install as normal.
[Skamm] a full install is
like 800MB. This will take a LONG TIME to do on a
slow, like modem connection.
