About LinuxPPC.org
LinuxPPC.org is the official home of the Linux/PPC project, the native port of Linux to the PowerPC processor. Linux/PPC runs natively on PCI-based Apple PowerMacs, many IBM & Motorola PReP and CHRP workstations, Amiga Power-UP systems and several embedded platforms including the Motorola MBX and RPX. The kernel supports multiple processors (SMP), which works on some Power Macs and certain 4-CPU IBM RS/6000 computers.
LinuxPPC Inc. is the company that sells the most popular Linux/PPC distribution (and runs this site). LinuxPPC supports Linux/PPC by making regular hardware donations to kernel developers. The LinuxPPC web site is located at http://www.linuxppc.com.
Linux booted on the PowerPC 403GCX processor
In a recent message to the linuxppc-embedded mailing list, Grant Erickson reported booting a Linux kernel on the IBM 403GCX evaluation board.The 403GCX microprocessor is an embedded PowerPC microprocessor, designed to run quickly, yet produce very little heat and consume very little power -- traits that have always been an advantage of the PowerPC architecture. The eval board that Erickson worked on was a 50 MHz 403GCX, and was booted over Ethernet via NFS. Congratulations, Grant!
linuxppc.org now hosting Robert Shaw's Blue G3 site
linuxppc.org is now hosting Robert Shaw's Linux on the Blue G3 site. Shaw's site is famous for its comprehensive information about running LinuxPPC on Apple's high-end G3 machines, and should make a great addition to the linuxppc.org web site.

Test version of BootX available
Omnipotent Linux/PPC developer Benjamin Herrenschmidt has posted a new test version of the BootX software on his test page.
IBM posts official POP design page
IBM Microelectronics has posted an official web site about the PowerPC Open Platform design. Of greater interest to most right now is the diagram of the board, showing major chips and parts. The company expects to have the design finished in "Fall 1999".
Sun's JDK 1.2.1 (pre-v1) and JDK 1.1.8 (v1) available
Linux/PPC Java developer Kevin Hendricks has announced JDKs for glibc 2.1-based Linux/PPC distributions. The Java on Linux/PPC site also has a new home: http://khendricks.ivey.uwo.ca/linuxppc/jdk/index.html. If your browser is incompatible with Java, use this link instead.
What's new:
We're making some changes here at www.linuxppc.org. The site is beginning to transition back to being a developer-oriented site, which will be happening over the next few months.
We are now hosting the PowerPC FAQ, which is the primary FAQ file for the PowerPC processor. There's also a hardware compatibility database in the works. If you have other ideas, please send them to webmaster@linuxppc.org.
