Outlook Express 5 FAQs
What happened to the password dialog I used to get when opening an Identity?This functionality was removed because we determined that our method of storing the startup password was easily bypassed. For people who need true security for their messages and contacts, Mac OS9 will provide security at the operating system level and offers Mulit-User functionality with both password and voice print logon. This is a much better solution. We recommend users upgrade to Mac OS 9 or secure your data using a third-party encryption tool.

Why don't scripts I add to the script menu items show up?
OE looks for scripts
to display in a folder called "Script Menu Items" which is in your "Microsoft
User Data" folder. Your "Microsoft User Data" folder will either be in your
"Documents" folder if you have one or in your "Outlook Express 5" folder next
to your "Outlook Express" application.

How
do I get new sound sets?
There will
be an Application to create your own custom Sound Sets for Outlook Express on
the Unofficial Outlook Express page. Be sure to check http://www.macemail.com/oe/
to see when this tool is available.

I
am getting an error when I check my pop email
Some servers
will respond with a generic error if your mailbox is empty when OE asks for
a list of messages. This error won't occur if there is mail in your mailbox.
If you are getting the error "The POP server returned an unexpected reply to
a command that Outlook Express issued. Error: -16999." it is really your server
telling OE that your mailbox is empty in a way that Outlook Express did not
expect.

Errors
importing email from Claris Emailer
There are
some situations where importing mail from Claris Emailer will fail. As a work
around use the following AppleScript to import your e-mail:
ftp://ftp.macemail.com/oe/Import_all_Emailer_msgs.hqx
Once you download this file, place it in your Script Menu Items folder, launch
Outlook Express and select it in the AppleScript Menu.

Is
the Internet Explorer 4.5 certificates security issue a Y2K issue?
Absolutely not. Coincidentally, midnight of December 31, 1999 is the time and
day certain vendors have chosen for certain certificates to expire. Microsoft
is providing a service to customers by providing an update that will continue
to keep Internet Explorer 4.5 users secure in all their online transactions.
We encourage all Internet Explorer 4.5 users to download our solution to this
problem as soon as it comes available to ensure ongoing browser security.
Microsoft Office Manager Menu cannot be customized by any user type
The Microsoft Office
Manager (MOM) can be used to access Office 98 applications when running OS 9.
However, users will be unable to customize the MOM menu. This includes both
normal users and those defined as Multiple users.
To work around this issue, hold down the control and command (apple)
keys while launching the MOM control panel. Or hold down the control and command
(apple) keys while selecting Customize from the MOM menu.

When running OS 9, Excel 5 does not function properly
The Open, Save and
Save As commands will not respond when called. Excel 5 customers may receive
"not enough memory" errors when starting Excel 5 under OS 9.
To work around this issue, Microsoft Excel 5 users should know that this
earlier version of Excel is incompatible with Apple's recently released Mac
OS 9. Excel 98 is fully compatible with Mac OS 9, and therefore we recommend
customers upgrade to Excel 98 if they plan to run Mac OS 9 for the optimal computing
experience. Customers wishing to continue running Excel 5 should not upgrade
to OS 9. If they already have done so, their previous version of the Mac OS
should be reinstalled.

When is the
next version of IE for the Macintosh set for release?
We do not have a date yet for the next version of Internet Explorer for the
Mac. We released IE 4.5 at Macworld in January '99 to incredible success! Be
sure to watch Microsoft MacTopia for breaking news concerning all the great
Microsoft products for the Mac.

Will there be
an Office 2000 for the Mac?
There is not an Office 2000 for the Mac. Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition
and Office 2000 for Windows share identical file formats and will continue to
enable easy information sharing between Macintosh and Windows Office users.
The Windows and Macintosh Office teams are on alternating release cycles, and
will continue to leapfrog each other as our key priority is to release a quality
application that will enhance the computing experience of our Macintosh customers.
The Office 2000 for Windows product will offer features and functionality not
in Office 98 Macintosh Edition, while the next version of Mac Office will offer
innovations not available in Office 2000 for Windows. File formats will not
change in the next version of Mac Office, so the ability to seamlessly share
Office files will continue to be easy for Office customer using Macintosh and
Windows computers.

Why can't I
find the Microsoft's Personal Web Server (PWS) for Macintosh?
Microsoft will no longer be continuing to offer or develop the Personal Web
Server for the Macintosh. Users who want a personal web server can use Apple
Computer's built-in Personal Web Server. We will continue our development efforts
on world class internet applications such as Internet Explorer 4.5 and Outlook
Express 4.5, serving the majority of our customers by continuing to deliver
the best email client and web browser available.

I've seen a
couple of pages with 404's...why is that?
Almost every time you get a 404, it is because we are either refreshing the
pages on the server, or the server is getting hit too hard. Microsoft MacTopia
sees so many visitors, that often the servers get "slammed". When
you get a 404, simply refresh the page, and you should almost certainly get
the desired page. If you do find a link to product information or to a Mac site
that has moved, we'd love to know about it. (One of the most popular pages on
Microsoft MacTopia is the Mega Links, where we keep over 200 links- which takes
a ton of upkeep.)

Is Office 98
Macintosh Edition affected by the speculative recent privacy issues affecting
Windows 98 and Office 97 for Windows?
This scenario does not apply to Office 98 documents because our registration
process is different on the Macintosh. The unique identifier number inserted
into Office 98 documents was designed to help third parties build tools to work
with and reference Office 98 documents. We are very sensitive to privacy issues
and want to ensure that our customers feel secure with their Office documents.
Microsoft has issued a letter to customers addressing privacy issues located
at http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/1999/03-08custletter2.htm.
We would never unknowingly collect information from our Macintosh customers.
A unique identifier does not contain any hidden information about the user and
is not possible to identify the originator of an Office 98 document by examining
the unique number generated for that document without intimate knowledge of
the originating Macintosh network configuration, which is available only to
the owner of that machine. We have reviewed this issue and in an effort to alleviate
any concerns our customers, we will provide a patch to prevent the creation
of unique identifiers from future Office 98 documents. The patch will be located
at http://www.microsoft.com/macoffice/users/freedl.htm.

another version of Encarta for the Mac?
The Encarta product team has changed the way it serves our Encarta Encyclopedia
for the Mac customers, shifting the Mac portion of our development efforts from
CD to online. Our decision to not produce a 99 version in no way signals a reduction
in commitment to the Mac platform, a switch in delivery method that will continually
be monitored. To help make the transition easier for our many loyal Encarta

Do the "Melissa"
and "Papa" viruses affect Word and Excel 98 Macintosh Edition? Does
it affect Word and Excel 98 Macintosh Edition in the same way it affects Word
and Excel 97 for Windows when used in conjunction with Outlook 98 and 2000 for
Windows?
The Macro viruses Melissa and Papa can infect Word and Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
users, but the virus will not be propagated using Microsoft email applications
Outlook Express Macintosh Edition and Outlook for Macintosh, Exchange Server
