Python 1.6

In compliance with the terms of an agreement between CNRI and BeOpen, BeOpen will complete a final release of Python 1.6 under CNRI's new licensing terms. The expected schedule is as follows:

  • August 4, 2000 - Python 1.6 beta 1

  • Mid August, 2000 - Python 1.6 (final release)

New features in Python 1.6 include Unicode support, the new SRE regular expression engine, and other features that were present in Python 1.6 alpha 2 (released April 11, 2000). Many (but not all) of the new features listed in Andrew Kuchling's and Moshe Zadka's document What's New in Python 2.0 are already present in Python 1.6.

Soon after, BeOpen will start the release cycle for Python 2.0, a BeOpen release. Work on the 2.0 code base is already under way in the Python project at SourceForge.
