Hear Ye! Hear Ye! -Fred, 29/02
I've finally updated and fixed the file archive so now all the wallpapers works, I have also uploaded the train level sound clip to our file archive, with permission from Mr. Chin Lee. I've added MeBot's excellent wallpaper to our file archive as well, it's damn nice so be sure to grab it and remember, if you'd like to see your own wallpaper in our file archive then just drop me a note.

We're also looking for some new picture's of the day, so please, if you want contribute then send the pictures to us.

    Gil Gribb Interview -Alex, 28/02
Although Fred and I are both a bunch of lazy bums we hide it well don't we? We're proud to present to you, our faithful readers, the newest in our long line of interviews. This time our victim was Gil Gribb, the man behind GHOUL.

Q: We've heard from some very Kream-y sources that the game is close to being finished. Any truth to this oh all-knowing one?

A: If it was any closer to being done, it would be done.
Gil had lots of other very cool info for us so be sure to check out the entire thing here. Well, almost the whole thing... there are some things that Fred wouldn't allow me to ask... ;)

Even More SoF Shots -Fred, 28/02
Will this madness ever stop, Incite Games have posted yet another batch of screenshots from our favorite game, Soldier of Fortune. The screenshots shows off the snowbound third level of SoF which features some cool fog effects to limit your visibility, and thus firing range.

Jake Simspon .plan Update -Fred, 28/02
Raven's programmer, Jake Simpson updated his .plan with an update on the Soldier of Fortune development process. There's also a little blurb on the Computer Game Developer's conference. Here's a snip from the full update:

Well, Raven is in the grip of Release Candidate Tenision (tm). QA is pounding on the code pretty hard and we are fixing the bugs as soon as we get them. That's one nice thing about having a demo out there, QA tends to shake the code tree pretty hard for the demo release, leaving you with bugs at RC time that you've introduced since then. It narrows down where you need to look when you come to fix them. SOF is looking very solid, so fingers crossed we don't have to submit 15 Release Candidates:)

    More SoF Shots -Fred, 28/02
Those lucky bastards over at CGO have kicked up a bunch of shots from the latest preview build (see what I mean with lucky?). Most of these shots are really neat so I suggest that you check them out, and if you just can't get enough of this fine game then I suggest that you take a look at CGO's lenghty preview which comes together with a batch of kick ass shots.

Soldier of Fortune Demo FAQ Updated -Fred, 27/02
HQH informed me that he has updated his unofficial yet excellent Soldier of Fortune Demo FAQ, bringing it up to v2.27.2000. No major updates just some minor ones to accommodate the latest SoF version. Swing by HQH's homepage for the FAQ.

    SoF Wallpaper -Fred, 27/02
Suresh has let me know that he has released his first wallpaper based on Soldier of Fortune, and the wallpaper is available in three resolutions (640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768). Be sure to check this wallpaper out as it kicks some serious ass, good work Suresh!

    SoF Shots -Fred, 27/02
Billy over at Voodoo Extreme received three neat (exclusive) screenshots from Raven Software's upcoming "family-oriented upcoming action game", Soldier of Fortune. The screenshots shows off the Submachine Gun, the Heavy Machine Gun and some sniper action.

    More levels?! -Alex, 26/02
You see folks, we here at SoF Center really care about our readers. Since we have no lives, we spend all day reading all the SoF related stuff we can find to bring you only the best! Dan Kramer aka El Krem posted an interesting message over on the Ravensoft Message Boards regarding the possibility of additional MP levels available at release.

There is also the possibility (a very likely one) of several other Raven DM maps (CTF and otherwise) being released onto the web for download.
Looks quite promising. Lets keep our fingers crossed!

Incite Interviews Bob Love -Alex, 26/02
The boys over at Incite decided to interview Dr. Love... err... Robert Love I mean. They discuss everything from Raven's indoor swimming pool to scantly clad Dutch masseuses. There's even a stunning interpretation of Henry VIII for your reading pleasure... *coughs* You can check out the entire article, with plenty of witty comments sprinkled throughout, right here.

I'll caution you though, the Incite boys don't know the difference between Seven and Cpt. Janeway, so you might want to watch your backside around them.

    No Designer's Diary -Fred, 25/02
For all those of you who came here looking for this week's Designer's Diary, I have bad news for you. Unfortunately, there will be no designer's diary this week due to Eric's very busy schedule as Soldier of Fortune is so close to the release. But hey, a good thing is that the game is so damn close to release :-)

    SoF Preview -Fred, 25/02
The chaps at CGO have posted a well-written preview of our favorite game (that's Soldier of Fortune, duh!). The preview features a bunch of impressive screenshots, and for all those of you who wonder, they have previewed the latest beta-build, not the OEM/Demo.

    .plan Updates -Alex, 25/02
Plenty of .plan updates for you folks. Since, as you all know, I'm a lazy bum, these are all going under one post.

First on our list of people who think they're important... err... I mean, Very Important People, is Kenn Hoekstra presenting his defense against allegations of deserting SoF. He's not a 100% deserter, only a 75% one :)

Thursday, February 24th, 2000 - Just to clarify things: It should be
noted that I'm still working on Soldier of Fortune. I will be working
with the PR and helping with tech support long after the game is
finished. My comments yesterday were only meant to say that rather
than spending 75% of my time on Soldier and 25% on Elite Force, the
roles will be reversed. Fear not...there's enough of me to go around. =)
Next on the list we have Brian Raffel. While it is quite obvious that he's just trying to be like Eric Biessman, we'll let it slide... this time. Actually, the article he mentions is a very good read so check it out.
For those of you interested - If you check out GameSpot's Designer Diary of SOF I posted a small story
on our meeting with John Mullins and what he did to help us on SOF.
Finally, we bring you the ever-entertaining Rick Johnson who engages in some pleasant Ion Storm bashing. Not that we support such actions or anything... ahem...
For almost a year now, I haven't done any ION Storm or Daikatana Bashing, BUT:

This message thread where The Romero talks about
the only SP FPS to ship with CTF

Come on! Last I checked, Daikatana hasn't shipped. And besides, who says SoF won't beat Daikatana out the
door? SoF has almost as many CTF maps (7) as Daikatana has DM maps total (10) :)
Phew! That was fun. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming... wait... nevermind... that would be us. :)

    SoF Movie -SuperCat, 24/02
Incite has a few new SoF movie files you can download. The movies takes you deep into SoF's gameplay and level layout, along with a few more cool stuff. Click here for more

    Shots Galore! -Fred, 24/02
Phew, finally got around to update a few sections here at Soldier of Fortune Center, also updated the left navigation bar a bit. Here's a list of the sections that have been updated:

  • Screenshots Section - now features 170 (!) Soldier of Fortune screenshots (I assume this is the biggest collection of SoF shots available on the 'net).

  • Game Info Section - a new section plus some minor updates.

  • Links, reviews and previews sections added.
  • Also be sure to check out our updated weapons page

    .plan Update -Alex, 24/02
Just when you thought there was nothing interesting left to learn about SoF, Dan Kramer aka El Krem, provides us with some interesting facts in his latest .plan update:

===Little known SOF fact of the day===

Number of lines in which the following words appear in the SOF codebase:

    please: 40
    don't: 854
throw: 1339 (darn, two too many... wonder if Rick'd authorize some rewording of comments after code freeze)
    monkey: 8
    crap: 40
And remember El Krem, Big Brother (Kenn) is watching...

    PC.IGN.COM 53 Shots! -, 24/02
The lucky guys down at PC.IGN.COM have gotten there hands on a beta of Soldier Of Fortune, and have posted 53 Shots!!!

We finally laid hands on a full beta of Soldier of Fortune this week and to be honest, we've been playing it when we were supposed to be working.
Personally, I dont blame these guys!

Kenn Hoekstra on E3 -Fred, 24/02
Stomped at E3 has posted Raven Software's Kenn Hoekstra's E3 memories and expectations, where he tells them about VERY famous and classic TV actor who came to have Soldier of Fortune demoed for him at 1999's E3, check it all out here

SoF Preview and exclusive screenshots -Fred, 24/02
Neticule sent me an e-mail informing me that AlloyGaming.com have tossed up a brand new Soldier of Fortune preview together with a batch of exclusive screenshots. Here's a taste from the lenghty preview:

SOF seems to be pretty exciting and has enough features to make it stand on its own. From what Ive seen the graphics, sound (A3D and EAX are supported) and animations is really cool. Multiplayer is a good wholesome family fun (well, if your family is all over the ages of 18). SOF is extremely violent and pardon my disturbing ways, but the violence really makes it a lot more fun and is really cool to watch. SOF is the most realistic FPS so far and having an ex-soldier working on the game really helps to accomplish that goal. The gore level can be turned down, but what fun is it when you shoot someone in the head and have no blood? So, if you ever dreamt about being a trigger-happy hero, this is closest to the real thing. Be sure to see this game on store shelves in about a month or two.
Check out the full preview over at AlloyGaming.com

    Movies and Pics -Alex, 24/02
I decided to pay our buddies over at Planet SoF a little visit and, lo and behold, I saw something which I should have thought of first but didn't. Remember those "wave" commands that were posted recently to allow you to wave during your MP games? Well, the guys at Planet SoF took some screenshots of the animations so you can actually see what they look like. Since they apparently don't have a nifty news script which allows direct linking to particular posts, just scroll down their news list and you'll see them.

Now, while I was out and about and checking out their site, I saw something that we didn't inform you of first! *GASP!* Embarassing as this is, it is certainly our duty to inform our readers both of WHAT is new and WHERE we found the news. There are 3 items of interest:

  • GameSpot has posted 7 new screenshots of SoF.
  • Alloygaming has posted a new preview of SoF.
  • Incite Gaming have put up 2 new movies showing SoF in action for your viewing pleasure.

I am very sorry for the oversight of this on our part and I would like to thank the Planet SoF guys for not killing us (I hope :) for blatantly ripping their news.

    Weapons Page Updated! -Fred, 23/02
Finally got around to update our weapons page, which looks pretty damn good now if I may say so myself. Kenn also sent us an awesome image of the Microwave Pulse Gun (MPG), so now our weapons page is complete, Thanks Kenn.

Kenn Hoekstra .plan Update -Fred, 23/02
Kenn Hoekstra just updated his .plan with some information about him starting to move over full time to Voyager - Elite Force, he also mentions the Official Soldier of Fortune Strategy Guide which will be published by BradyGames. Here's an excerpt from the .plan:

I've been wrapping up my commitment to Soldier of Fortune with some playtesting, writing the Official Soldier of Fortune Strategy Guide for BradyGames and by setting up some last minute reviews and previews with the European press.

At this point, I'm starting to move over full time to Voyager - Elite Force. I'll be helping Activision with some of the press on the game, working on the message boards, helping test and balance the game and, probably most importantly (for me anyway), writing the manual for the game. I won't be doing the strategy guide, though. The last one nearly killed me... =)

On a personal note, I'm still not smoking after two months. I'm pretty proud of that, so I thought I'd p1mp myself a bit. It's a mind-boggling 50 degrees in Madison today, so everyone's got their shorts and t-shirts on. Heh...we just got 8 inches of snow last week and now it's a heat wave and it's all melting. Go figure... As a result of the warm weather, though, the house I'm building breaks ground on Friday. SCORE
We gotta congratulate Kenn for his "two free months", damn impressive ;)

SOF patch on NGI -Fred, 23/02
SkyLuke just informed me that the Italian gaming site, NGI have put up the patch locally on their servers. Word has it that their server is very fast so if you haven't downloaded the patch yet, give it a try.

    Rick Johnson Interview -Fred, 23/02
Tokyo 3 have conducted an interview with the Soldier of Fortune lead programmer, Rick Johnson. They discuss a lot of things such as Rick himself, Soldier of Fortune and Raven's "un-announced" upcoming console game. Here's a snip on the John Woo style:

I guess what the world is just itching to know is...if you shoot an enemy in the gonads, will he drop to his knees, cradling his groin area, and leaving himself open to a pistol "John Woo" style execution?

Well, we didn't take it that far, but we did motion capture a sequence where the actor pretended to get hit there... Maybe we'll take that even farther in SoF2 (if we pursue that)...
Read more in the interview over at Tokyo 3.

Marcus Whitlock .plan Update -Fred, 23/02
Raven's programmer, Marcus Whitlock updated his .plan with following great information:

Finally, we're within spitting distance of the SoF finish line...
Since crunch time on HereticII happened well over a year ago - I'd all but forgotten how good it feels to be there.
    Sure sounds good. :)
