A software update for Microsoft's Windows NT operating system introduced a bug that could potentially cripple Lotus Notes unless companies compromise network security.

The bug in Windows NT Service Pack 6 prevents users from accessing Lotus Notes without administrator rights--the highest and broadest level of access typically reserved for network managers. The UltimateOS... Microsoft Corp. has revealed a security issue with the Mac version of Outlook Express 5.0 that may leave users of the free Internet e-mail client open to invasions by potentially destructive Trojan horses.

3dfx launches Voodoo4, Voodoo5 graphics accelerators - Luis 14:07 CDT
Today at the 3dfx press conference, 3dfx announced two graphics accelerators, the Voodoo4, and Voodoo5. The Voodoo4 series features a single-chip (VSA-100) card with 32MB of RAM; it comes in AGP and PCI variants and will cost $180. For the gaming enthusiasts, 3dfx is releasing a line of Voodoo5 cards, including two and four chip variants with 64MB or 128MB of video RAM. The cards range in price from $230 to $600. All of the new 3dfx cards are due in early 2000. They have opened a web site for both graphic cards here.

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) Chairman Bill Gates, locked in a legal battle with the U.S. government over domination of the software market, was quoted Sunday as saying he insisted on the right to determine what goes into the company's widely used Windows operating system.

"We'd love to resolve this thing, and we're going to be pragmatic about it," Gates told Time when asked if he was ready to settle. But Gates said he could not agree to a settlement that restricted what new applications could be added to Windows.

Major PC manufacturers are reporting shortages of Intel Corp.'s fastest processor, the 733MHz Pentium III, spurring some delays in PC deliveries.

An executive at Micron Electronics Inc. said the shortage has become a daily frustration for him and is forcing the computer maker to "juggle a lot."

Linus Torvalds, forefather of the open-source movement, will speak at Comdex tonight. Speculation is rampant that he will lift the lid off Transmeta, his top-secret startup. But The Red Herring speculates he'll only say that Transmeta is making a detailed announcement on January 19. From Transmeta's patent filings, The Red Herring deduces the company is working on a microprocessor for Internet access devices, rather than high-end PCs. These new chips would be able to run any operating system from Linux to Palm.

Windows 2000 delays due to application compatibility - Luis 21:27 CDT

According to sources close to the Windows 2000 team, the delays we've seen this fall were due to application compatability. Most frightening, however, is that the Application Compatability Project Manager was going through the internal bug reporting tool and downgrading "Priority 1" issues to "Priority 3" so that the daily counts of showstopper bugs would steadily go down whether or not actual work was being done. This activity was uncovered about a month and a half ago, so someone looked at all of the downgraded issues and gave them correct priority levels. Needless to say, it was discovered that the project was further behind than previously expected. As a result, a large number of people from the development and testing teams were shifted over to the Application Compatibility team; they've just started getting caught up again. Ouch!

If not then you need to try a few things which might help.

Fifth - Update those print drivers! Some printer drivers have a coding error that can cause one of these error messages to occur. To determine if this is the case, update or change the printer driver.

Sixth - Some print drives allow you to tell the OS how much memory the printer actually has. Once I know how much memory the printer has I make this change in the Printer Properties sheet of the printer, then I kill the print job and re-start it. Hey, it's worth a shot.

Seventh - Uninstall the printer - REBOOT - and then re-install the printer. This has worked more times than I can count.
