Has the IGNDC crew sold out to PS2? Does EA really truly suck? Find out what the readers think in today's letters.
IGNDC playing and enjoying PS2?
I saw the Pictures of IGN playing the PS2....and I saw you. You wer having a good time!!!!!! You have forsaken the Dreamcast Gods!!!!!
Kurtis Kristofferson
Anoop responds: What are you talking about? I was clearly frowning in the shot. I believe we were looking at Ridge Racer - what an ugly game for a system that Sony at one point claimed would be 50x as powerful as the Dreamcast.
Taking offense in all the wrong places.
Dear Sirs,
It is extremely offensive to place Ps2/PsX banners in the DC section of IGN.It doesnt do Sony/ps2 any good rather it only makes many many DC fans angry & turned off to Sony.I'm sure Ps2 "believers" would be upset by a SEGA/DC banner in the Ps2/PsX area.Do us & yourselves a favor.
NO MORE PS2 ADS IN DC IGN!!
Thanks.
Respectfully,
D.H.
Anoop responds: Either that, or it grabs a lot of potential PS2 owners. IGNDC does not compete with Sony - Sega does. And if you're offended by seeing a PlayStation-related ad on the site, then I've got some momma joke that will REALLY piss you off.
So paddles are real, eh?
Anoop dropped the ball a bit here, saying he wished the Thrustmaster wheel had "An actual gear shifter..."
Actually, two paddles behind the wheel _is_ an "actual gear shifter".
It's called the F1 Paddle Shift Transmission, and it's availible on the
Ferrari F355 Spyder and F360 Modena. It's one of Ferrari's more popular
options. (The transmission can also act in an 'automatic' mode.)
Granted, the F1 Paddle Shift is a $10,000 option on the F360 Modena, but it's not surprising to see it on a Ferrari-licensed game product.
(And as a bonus wierd fact: On the F360 Modena F1, the shift paddles don't turn with the wheel - they stay at 3 and 9 o'clock no matter how you turn the wheel.)
Windchaser
Anoop responds: I stand corrected. I should've figured as much, seeing as how Sega's F355 arcade game allows you the option of using the paddles or the side stick.
The DOA2 demo
Thouhgt you might be interested to know that I strolled into my local EB today (Central NY) & they were running a playable demo of DOA. It's looking really sweet.
- jhbassy
Anoop responds: Oh yeah . . . well I have the demo for my own personal use, and I sleep with it held tightly in my arms.
You gotta listen, man.
I don't like voice acting in any form in video games. Why? Because I
rarely want to listen to a game at all. I have my stereo in the same
room as my DC and would much rather listen to some music I really like
than some video game music. Back when everything was text it was
great. I played FF7 without hearing the music once. They need to stick
with subtitles, weither it is for a good translation or for my sake.
-- Champ Mang
Anoop responds: You're missing out on a good part of the game.
EA Sucks: #1
Brandon,
I'm glad that one of you gaming site/magazine editors finally had the balls enough to point out Electronic Arts' obvious and childish rejection of Sega and Dreamcast. Bing Gordon's excuses for not publishing a Dreamcast game is almost as lousy as the blindingly lame-o shirt he decided to wear for the interview...
It's too obvious that EA's decision not to support Sega isn't based on hard sales projections but some "grudge" the suits at EA have with Sega and their decision to turn away 3Dfx. "Behind the technology curve" with NEC's chip? Give me a break. Any programmer worth his/her code will attack any machine with fervor, regardless of how complex or different it is. It's obvious who has the power in the company--it certainly doesn't belong to the people who make the games happen. It belongs to some suit who really needs to get a grip with the sales data and, above all, the obvious--that a Dreamcast game will make you some serious "kwan".
You also cannot tell me that a Dreamcast game will not sell when Namco has already sold over a million Soul Calibur games worldwide, and Capcom sold nearly half a million copies of Code Veronica in three weeks. I'm sick and tired of hearing everyone from Bing Gordon to magazine editors to newsgroups trolls claiming that the Dreamcast isn't a viable machine when all hard facts point to it being an overwhelming success (in North America and Europe, at least). The ironic part of it all is that Sega has genuinely tried to make it up to the consumer by providing a CHEAP, powerful machine with internet access, but many people, EA included, have already given Sega three strikes. The only explanation for this anti-Sega fervor is simple--blind loyalty and ignorance. We've already devoted next year's allowance or our next three paychecks for PlayStation2--blind loyalty. We see the name "Sega" on a machine and automatically think it's another 32X--ignorance.
Regards,
Andrew
Anoop responds: Word up, man.
EA Sucks: #2
I just read the editorial regarding EA (Electronic Arts) and I am
pissed. I have supported EA since the Genesis days. I have regularly
purchased every yearly update of their major sports titles without fail. I
even restrained myself from buying 989 Studios sports titles on the
playstation out of loyalty to EA. What have I gotten for my loyalty? SPIT
IN THE FACE!
The job of game companies is to get quality titles into the hands of
gamers, period! If EA doesn't want to deliver the games, I will buy some
other company's games. Simple as that. I have read the "official" reasons
EA has given for not supporting the Dreamcast, but I believe the real reason
they wont support the Dreamcast is they are afraid of pissing off Sony.
Honestly, I dont care what EA does. If EA wants to turn its back on me,
I will reciprocate. As of now, until the day I DIE, I will not purchase EA
titles (yes, that includes all the PS2 games they will be offering.) EA, I
hope you re-evaluate your decisions regarding the Dreamcast before you lose
more customers such as myself.
Hey EA, dont forget: gamers MADE you by buying your products, and gamers
can BREAK you buy not buying your products.
Eric
P.S. I really hope gamers take a stand and stop purchasing EA products.
This is the only way to make EA really listen to us! If they dont make
money, they dont stay in business, simple as that. So I ask all of you
reading this to let EA know how you feel by not buying their products!
Together we can make a difference.
Anoop responds: Uh-huh, Uh-huh . . ..
EA Sucks: #3
Brandon,
Great article ("Throwing it all away") concerning EA. I must disagree with
you, in part, on one issue though. I do not care if EA Sports supports the
Dreamcast. I have purchased NFL2K, NBA2K, and NHL2K (and by the way I'm not
even a hockey fan) and I am greatly impressed with Visual Concepts and
BlackBox. Like you pointed out, all EA does is update their game year after
year (Just check out the screen shots of Madden 2001 on PS2. Looks like
Madden 2000 on N64 with some upgrades). I haven't seen anything new from
them since the Genesis. Yeah I know it would help boost the Dreamcast but
hey, if Sega would get off their butts and start going after these guys in
their advertisements I think that would boost the Dreamcast more than
anything. This is what I mentioned in another letter a few days ago. The
WWF took the WCW head on and won. Sega can do this too. I do believe that
Sega needs to and probably is going to make college games for football and
basketball. I hope they do as they did on the Genesis and bring out a
boxing and tennis game too. As far as not having any competition I think
Sega needs to look at survival as their competitor and continue to make
quality games. You've got some clout. Go over to Sega and light a fire
under their behinds. Let's give up on EA and just keep buying quality
sports games from our friends at Sega.
Jeff
Anoop resopnds: The problem is that Sega can't do EVERYTHING by itself, but EA seems to have most sports areas covered.
EA Sucks: #4 - even Jimbo thinks EA sucks.
Hey Guys
Just wanted to chime in and say that Brandon Justice's editorial on EA throwing it all away, was right on the money. I don't usually write in on discussions of this nature but as a dedicated DC fan, who happens to own every system known to man(and prospective PS2 purchaser come fall) I figured I should let my voice be heard in the hopes that EA does take a look at the article and email replys. I wanted to thank Brandon's restraint when it came down to verbally abusing EA(clearly thats not the way to go), his disdain for EA's reluctance to get onboard the Dreamcast was clearly evident in his arguments, which was the enire point he wanted to get across(this is what irks us, EA!!). Quite easily the discussion could of turned into a rabid fanboy "DC ROCKS, PS2 SUCKS!!!??!" argument, but Mr. Justice(how fitting) played both arguments with equal regard(with a bit of humor built in as well, loved the PS2 in bed pic). For the most part you kept it cool, with only a few complete rips on EA's esteem.
Clearly EA's decision is illogical, and is screwing the The DC fans here in America, and only America(errr...maybe FIFA and TRIPLE PLAY do play a part but....) because as far as I know, Japan gives two squats about american football and its evil cousin basketball. Their descision to abandon any hope for development of games on the FRUITFULL US Dreamcast market is just plain wrong. To be honest I've never believed EA(sports in particular) have been inovators in any large way. Their Madden and NBA series haven't really progressed very far from their early days on the Genesis, making very small gains as they went about. I believe Visual Concepts came up with a more innovative, and graphically impressive game in their first outing than EA has ever put up, but thats exactly where EA can proves us all wrong by working on something just as innovative for the DC. Just a false hope I guess. To EA, Rethink your decision(millions of DC users want to see your products on this platform), and to dc.ign.com, thanks for running an honest and cut to the bone article as ever I've read one...... Keep hope alive indeed.
Jimbo
