New Baseball and Basketball Games Coming to Dreamcast in 2000

Get all the details on the wackiest deal in the gaming industry.

November 4, 1999

Disney Interactive, ESPN, and Konami announced today that they'd be producing a full lineup of ESPN sports titles for game consoles and personal computers. We've received further confirmation that Major Leage Baseball and NBA Basketball titles will be released through ESPN Games for the Dreamcast in Spring of 2000. These titles are being developed in America, and are not sequels to existing Konami franchises. A second wave of titles to be launched in the fall will include officially licensed league sports, and titles based on ESPN programming.

In terms of multi platform, the companies see ten titles being released in 2000. The deal is the largest in interactive sports gaming history, with key athletes teamed up with the extended ESPN family, including ESPN television, radio, store fronts, web site, and publications.

The deal is meant to combine the power and sports leadership of ESPN with Konami's expertise in technology and game development. We have no word on how Disney will feature into the deal, although we doubt that you'll be seeing a Mickey Mouse Pro Action Football Starring Simon Belmont in the near future.

Kazumi Kitaue, managing director of Konami Co. Ltd, had strong words for the deal. "Konami is delighted to be a partner with ESPN in this venture," said Kitaue. "It gives us the opportunity to build a strong and respected sports gaming brand while allowing ESPN to reach a new audience of sports enthusiasts through Konami's vast retail distribution."
