RPM Now
| | | | John Kernan. |
John Kernan, host of ESPN2's weeknight RPM 2Night, hosts RPM Now, a weekly two-hour show packed with news, interviews and discussion. News from other racing circuits is also included in this 8 p.m. ET Friday program which generally originates from RPM 2Night's studio near Charlotte, N.C.
In addition to Kernan, NASCAR reporter Mike Massaro and NHRA reporter Bill Stephens contribute to RPM Now.
"I'm really excited about this, another great opportunity ESPN has given me," Kernan said before the debut show of Feb. 27, 1998. "The great relationships we've established with racers on RPM 2Night will help us. Compared to television, radio interviews are easy. All drivers will have to do is pick up a cell phone from their trailer."
Kernan returned to his broadcasting roots hosting RPM Now. His first broadcasting job was at KFTW-AM in Fredericktown, Mo., while in high school in 1975. A graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, his sportscasting experience includes two years (1980-82) at KFRU-AM in Columbia, Mo., where he provided sports reports and hosted a sports call-in show. At the same time, he served as a sports anchor for KOMU-TV in Columbia.
He joined ESPN as a pit reporter in 1990, having served as a sports director at WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, Va., since 1983. He added his duties as host of ESPN2's RPM 2Night when the weekday show debuted in 1996.
News from 'Next Heavy Rain Area'
Dec. 6 show with Whit Watson, filling in for John Kernan
Robin Miller, rpm.espn.com - Robin joined Whit to talk about drivers switching from CART to other racing leagues. Robin said, "the next two years are going to be tough for CART, they are paying out a lot of money for TV rights and they're not making enough back. It is their own fault. Losing Honda and Toyota really hurt CART." Whit and Robin also spoke about Mike Vick, Robin thinks "he's unbelievable". (8:07 pm)
Bill Stephens, rpm.espn.com - Bill and Whit joked about how much NHRA races get rained out, Whit dubbed NHRA the "Next Heavy Rain Area". Bill said that his studio pal Mike Dunn may be going back behind the wheel next year. The final decision comes next Thursday, Bill said "we'll have to see what happens at that meeting." Bill said that Mike was good in the booth, "he did a great job of explaining very complicated racing terms and making them understandable to people. He opened up the sport for a lot of people who wouldn't have understood what we were talking about." Whit asked Bill if Mike goes back to racing will he gain any advantage from being in the booth for a year, "Mike will definitely have an advantage because for a year now, he has been able to see things that he has never seen before. What with slow-motion and all the other things that we have in the booth." (9:07 pm, 9:27 pm)
