Looking for more help with your troubleshooting? For starters, if your problem is specific to a particular product, check the technical support web pages of the product's vendor. Otherwise, here is a collection of the sites I check first when I am looking for help. This list makes no pretense of being comprehensive. These are just my personal favorites (in addition to MacFixIt of course!):
- Apple - Support
- Good overview of Apple's support options.
- Software Support
- Need help with the latest version of the Mac OS? Or other Apple software? Here is a good place to start.
- iMac Support
- The starting place for all of Apple's iMac support info.
- Tech Exchange
- Most notable as the starting point for links to Apple's Discussion Forums - where you can post questions to Apple and read Apple's replies. Separate links exist for different categories (Desktop Computers, Portable Computers, Mac OS & Applications, etc.)
- Tech Info Library
- Check here to search Apple's database of Tech Info Library files. Or you can check a list of recently posted files, check here.
- Software Updates
- Apple releases some new bit of "free" software almost every day. Sometimes it is simply a bug-fix for a rarely used program. Sometimes it is a major update to the system software. It is all available for downloading. Use this link to list Apple's most recent additions. From there, you find links to search the entire database.
- Support Mail Lists
- Subscribe to Apple's various support email services, including the Information Alley.
- Developer Technotes
- These are more technical than the TIL files, but often contain useful information for end users.
- Press Releases
- Check here for the latest Apple press releases.
- The Macintosh Resource Page
- MacInTouch Home Page
- MacCentral
- O'Grady's PowerPage
- MacSurfer Headline News
- Summaries of news headlines gathered from all of the above sites and more.
- MacWEEK Online
- Macworld
- MacAddict
- Mac Home Journal
- Version Tracker
- Up-to-date list of the latest released updates of Macintosh product.
- Complete Conflict Compendium
- Check to see if anyone else has the same problem you have.
- Mac Pruning Pages
- Get the lowdown on all the extensions and control panels in your System Folder.
- NoWonder
- Free online tech support via email and bulletin boards.
- Recent Info-Mac files
- Check here for newly available shareware/freeware or search for older files.
- Download.com
- CNET's searchable database of shareware and freeware available on the Internet.
- Macintosh Logic Board Battery Information
- Need to replace your Mac's internal battery? Don't know how? Check here.
If you are looking for help for those difficult problems that no one else can seem to solve, there are numerous mailing lists to which you can subscribe. Just leave your question and expect to get a answer within a day or less. My personal favorite is:
- Mac-Wizards
- Subscribe via email to Majordomo@cc.gatech.EDU (subscribe mac-wizards <your email address>). Summaries of selected Mac-Wizards discussions can be found at this web site.
And, of course, there are dozens of Usenet newsgroups that cater to Macintosh questions. The ones that begin with comp.sys.mac are the best.
- If you only have time to look at one, the one to look at is: comp.sys.mac.system
- Back on the Web, check out Deja News. It's a searchable database of virtually all the relevant Usenet newsgroups.
