TV: Mulder is Dead

Will David Duchovny's cynical attitude finally earn him the axe?

September 24, 1999

If you've been following the news lately, David Duchovny, a.k.a. Fox Mulder, hasn't been very happy of late. He's sued Fox because it gave series rights to its cable network (in other words, he didn't get enough money). He's blatantly told fans that a romance between Scully and Mulder is of no interest to him, and he's been caught on various talk shows saying that he's only in X-Files for the money. Well, it could be that producer Chris Carter and Fox have had enough of Duchovny, because the rumor has it Mulder goes bye-bye next season.

Coming out of AICN's Coaxial section is the possibility that Duchovny's sad and cynical FBI agent gets replaced by Stephen Rea (The Crying Game, In Dreams, who will presumably play an equally sad and driven FBI agent. This replaced will reportedly happen within the last four episodes of this coming season.

While some might compare it to Deep Space Nine's Terry Farrell/Nicole DeBoer Dax replacement, Chris Carter may have seen this coming. After all, the possibility has been raised before that Mulder would die in season seven. Also, remember season five's "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose," where the guy who could predict everbody's death prognosticates Mulder's horrible, sad death and Scully's immortality. It's a perfect way out.

Unfortunately, with season seven being the last season, it looks like Stephen's in for a short X-Files run, unless he's co-starring in the movies.

Is this the end for the X-Files? Can it survive without Mulder? Could it breathe new life into the series? E-mail us at letters@dailysci-fi.com and give us your two cents.
