The True Purpose of Eva

In the movie (towards the end) Yui states that the Evas were created to absorb the souls of all mankind, so that even when the Earth, Sun, and all the stars go dark, mankind will still exist in the body of the Evangelion, a monument to what was once humanity. There would always be a record that we exist as long as Eva floats thru space. Eva 01 was the Eva "chosen" to carry out this task, which is why Gendo frequently refused to use it in the TV series (besides the fact that his wife's soul was in it). Yui admits that it would be a lonely existance for the Eva and it's cargo of souls, but it would be a price worth paying if it allowed mankind's legacy to exist for all eternity amongst the stars.
