Oracle Patch for Apprentice and Suitcase

Last updated 8/08/00.

I have compiled a patch for Apprentice that incorporates the latest Oracle text for all cards where such text is available (sorry, there are no Oracle updates for cards unique to Unglued or the MTG Invitationals). The banned/restricted lists have also been updated.  I have also added a patch for The Magic Suitcase that corrects many of the flavor text, artist, and text box  errors I've discovered in the officially distributed database.

I will continue to develop these projects as time allows, but anyone interested in contributing may contact me at the email listed below.  I have completely reviewed  the Suitcase database on a set by set basis using the actual card or scanned image of that card from the appropriate set to ensure the information listed is what's *written on the card* (not what the card has been erratumed to read as Suitcase includes a separate feature to track rulings/errata).

Although these patches have been tested on several machines and haven't shown any problems, I have to emphasize that use is at your own risk. Additionally, any text errors are either because I'm prone to typos or poor phrasing in the Oracle itself.  Please let me know if you find any errors in any part of these updates so I may correct them in future updates (probably to be released within days of being notified of the error). :)

To use either patch, simply download the appropriate .zip file and decompress it to the directory where you have the program that patch is intended to update installed.  Some files will be overwritten so don't forget to back these up first if you think you might want to resort to your original card database at some point.

In using the Suitcase patch, be advised that I have altered the set abbreviations from those originally used in the database that accompanied the program to match those officially used by WotC where applicable. If you have a personal inventory database based on the original abbreviations, you will need to modify them as indicated below:
Set original abbreviation new abbreviation
Alpha A AL
Beta B BE
Unlimited UN UL
Alliances AL AI
Mirage MR MI
Tempest TP TE
Stronghold SH ST
Urza's Legacy UL UY
Portal PO P1
Portal Second Age PO2 P2
Starter ST P4
Anthologies AT AY
Promotional P PR

I also moved all the promotional 6" x 9" cards into a separate set.

The main conflicts will occur where a set's new abbreviation matches a different set's old abbreviation (Alpha/Alliances, Unlimited/Urza's Legacy, Stronghold/Starter). Please be sure to backup your ...suitcase/data/suitcase.cfg file if you do not want to convert to the new abbreviations on your system.

The Apprentice patch includes text for every card known to me and has added Portal, Portal Second Age, Portal Three Kingdoms, Starter, many  promotional cards, and the cards (including unique cards) used for the True Sealed portions of the 1999 and 2000 MTG Invitationals to those normally found in tournament card pools (the MTG  Invitational card lists were not included in the Suitcase patch since they were never real cards) to those that were officially distributed with Apprentice.

The Suitcase patch includes a unique entry for every card ever printed (that I know about anyway). The Apprentice patch includes one entry for each unique card using its current tournament rules text.

The following are links to sites I utilized in compiling these patches.  I would like to thank their webmasters and/or owners for making the most accurate, up to date information freely available to the public.  In addition, I would like to thank Brian Bauer for his analytical and programming skills that helped bring the Apprentice patch together.

DragonStar Studios The makers and/or distributors of both Apprentice and Magic Suitcase.

Oracle The official site of the Oracle.  For those who might not know, the Oracle is the official source for all card text and reflects any changes that might make a card work differently than what is printed on the actual card.  The most common reason for these text changes involve changes in the overall rules of the game or templating style, but also to repair poorly worded or unforeseen uses of a card.

WotC The official Wizard's of the Coast MTG website. These guys make the game that makes all this possible. When you want the official word, this is the place to look.

MTGNews  Consistently the most comprehensive source of unofficial information and/or out-right lies pertaining to MTG available anywhere.  Their unofficial spoilers were sometime consulted when WotC's site didn't carry a spoiler list for a particular set.

Newwave  Good strategy articles and the main source used when the unofficial Prophecy set was added early.

Yavapai Open When I couldn't find a card anywhere else, they usually had it here (along with an picture). They have an excellent online database, but much of it seems to be based on the original Suitcase database and contains the same errors.

Magic Suitcase Support Page A good site with a helpful webmaster and lots of support for users of Magic Suitcase.

Updates

08/08/00: Posted the patch for Enchanter. This patch contains the Oracle rules text for all cards and flavor text from all sets. The program is very buggy to start with and gets worse when tackling a large database of cards.

08/02/00: Corrected a few Suitcase patch discrepancies in Maraxus, Elvish Riders, and Urza's lands. (Thanx David Moye)

07/30/00: Verified the Vanguard set for the Suitcase patch. A few rules and flavor text errors corrected. This was the last set in the current database in need of verification. The databases overall accuracy is now greatly improved. I would like to thank all the people who continually double checked my work and notified of things I missed. Please continue to do so. I also added the French/German and Italian Renaissance sets to the Suitcase database. Database entries are in English for the 4th Edition and Chronicles cards these sets were based on although these sets were never printed in English.

Update history.
