News Type: General Developer Applications & Games Accelerators & Chips

Marching Cube Electron Density Mapping Visualization
02/28/00 Marching Cube ELD 1.1 beta 3 is a free program for 3D and 2D electron density map visualization. The software is optimized for visualization of ELD calculated from X-ray diffraction data of small molecules, but it will work for small proteins as well. Tested under Win9x/NT and fully supports OpenGL hardware acceleration and stereoscopic visualization.

Ultimate Blaster freeware OpenGL game
02/28/00 Ultimate Blaster is an OpenGL 3D space fighter game set in an asteroid field. Your goal is to destroy the enemy ships before they destroy you!

Thornsaver OpenGL screensaver with source
02/28/00 Saw over on Demonews word about a new OpenGL-accelerated screensaver, Thornsaver. The latest version of this particle demo screensaver should play .mp3's and also offer a couple of new effects.

Quake III OpenGL screensaver
02/28/00 3DFiles has posted a Quake III Arena screensaver for all video cards supporting OpenGL.

Updated OpenGL accelerator board list
02/25/00 Thanks to Jonathan Lin, our OpenGL accelerator board info page is now updated. If you are looking for an accelerator, check it out. Also if you know of an OpenGL accelerator that is not on the list, please drop and email to OpenGLBoards@opengl.org

Sample code for 3D real-time cartoon rendering using OpenGL
02/25/00 This sample code by Jeff Landers demonstrates a method for non-photorealistic cartoon rendering using OpenGL. He uses a 1D texture as a non-linear shading function. The dot product of the light vector and the surface normal is used to calculate which entry to grab out of a 32 entry shade table. This gets rid of the Gouraud shaded look and allows very flexible shading. The demo should run on any OpenGL fully complient driver.

Pondlife V 2.0 OpenGL screensaver
02/25/00 Pondlife 2 is a new OpenGL screensaver that looks like bacteria growing in a Petri dish using time-lapse photography.

Amazing Curves OpenGL engine and game
02/25/00 Brightland has posted some screenshots and movies (including anaglyph stereo3D) of their new OpenGL-based technology and game, Amazing Curves .The engine & race car game use Transparametric Hyperdomain Surfaces to represent everything from completely smooth, continuous surfaces, to extremely bumpy, discontinuous surfaces, and anything in between, at any desired spatial resolution, regardless of the rendered resolution.

Utah GLX hardware OpenGL acceleration for Unix OS
02/24/00 GLX is basically the glue that ties OpenGL and X together. The Utah-GLX project is building a hardware accelerated GLX module for free Unix OSs. It currently supports 3D acceleration on the Matrox MGA-G200, MGA-G400, Nvidia's RIVA series, ATI's Rage Pro and Intel's i810 for XFree86 3.3.x . Check out this Linux vs Windows benchmark article for Quake 3 using Utah-GLX .

ImageModeler uses OpenGL to produce 3D models from photos and video images.
02/24/00 An object is filmed or photographed from different viewpoints. The images are digitized and imported into ImageModeler. The user selects a few corresponding points on the object within each photo. The software then establishes a spatial relationship between all of the photos, and it calculates the 3-D space that the object resides in. It then displays a polygonal mesh that may be edited by the user. Finally, a combination of the original digital images are attached to the model's surfaces as texture maps. OpenGL is used for all accelerated rendering.

3DLabs Oxygen GVX210 high-end OpenGL accelerator
02/24/00 The new top-of-the-line Oxygen GVX210 combine two 3Dlabs GLINT R3 rasterization engines with the GLINT Gamma G2 geometry processor for Win9x/2k/NT. It uses a high-speed 256-bit memory bus, 64MB of onboard memory, 256MB of Virtual Textures and full OpenGL 1.2 geometry and lighting acceleration in hardware. PowerThreads OpenGL 1.2 drivers dynamically distribute the geometry and lighting load between the onboard geometry processor and the host PIII or Athlon CPU.

3D Tetris look-alike game for Linux using OpenGL
02/24/00 Blocks 1.0 is the first release of the OpenGL-accelerated 3D Tetris Look-alike game. for most OS platforms. An binary is available for Linux. The source of Blocks is included with recent versions of Crystal Space 3D

Public Comments Solicited for OpenGL ABI for Linux
02/23/00 The OpenGL ABI (Application Binary Interface) for Linux working group has opened a public comment period. The purpose of the ABI is to ensure that applications will build and run against a variety of implementations of the OpenGL API on Linux platforms, and it's important to get feedback from developers. Comments will be accepted through March 6, 2000, and the final ABI will be released shortly thereafter.
