TF2, Robin, and Cassutt
[12:19 PST - By DieHard]
I seen on
Blue's news that Cassutt got five questions answered from Robin. He posted the Q&A on Sierra's TeamFortress forum. For your convence the interview is found below:
Hello! I havent been on the forum in a while, but I have some great information here. Recently I had an e-mail interview with Robin Walker. Here are my questions and his replies! Enjoy!

1. What state is the game in?? Beta?? Alpha?

We're still working on lots of the pieces. Balancing the classes takes a long time. TF 1.5 will be out shortly as well, and the lessons we'll learn from it's networking will be rolled back into TF2. We're also planning on putting a few of TF2's features into TFC so we can better understand their repercussions on gameplay.

2. What is this "spyder grenade?" And could you maybe shed a little light on some of the other grenades?

The spider grenade's a recon and offensive tool that allows the Spy to scope out enemy areas before entering them. It's useful to see what enemies are waiting around the next few corners, and it allows the Spy to make better disguise decisions.

3. What are the different things that the engineer will be able to build?

The engineer builds a few smaller things, but his focus is still on his sentry guns. He's designed to be an essential in our territorial maps. Rangers, Gunners, and Marines take a position, and then the Engineers and Commandos move up and secure it with sentry guns, claymores, and so on.

4. What are the secondary weapons, and is their a basic pistle type weapon?

Secondary weapons vary according to the class. Some have basic pistols, some have sub-machine guns.

5. Are there really different looks for each class, such as different looking snipers, and male/female models?

Yes, each class has multiple models, as well as multiple "kits" that allow players to customize themselves. Our goal is that when you line 5 or so of a single class up next to each other, they're not carbon copies of each other.

Cassutt
Thanks for the heads up!

Spanner
[11:38 PST - By DieHard]
There is one thing that has been really bugging me. The engineer's weapon in TF/TFC is called the spanner. It is australian for wrench, but in the game it is called the spanner. Turn on developer mode (developer 1) in tfc to see. So for my sanity and others, please call the engineer's spanner a spanner. =)

TFMC Reviews NML3
[19:42 PST - By Slick]
Hey that one rhymes! Well guess what?!? Jinxhead (new guy at the
TFMC) has reviewed No Mans Land 3 - Meatgrinder. It's a prelude to what's going on at the TFMC (reviews!) so stop on by, read the review and check back tomorrow!
  • NML3 - If you like NML, which you should, you'll like NML3.

  • TF2 Interview
    [17:36 PST - By Slick]
They gals over at Cold-Ice have put up an
interview with Gabe Newell, it's pretty standard, 'till you get to the last question:
. Has the graphics scaling (detailed up close, bland from far away, for smoothness) just been implemented into a much overhauled Quake 2 engine, or did you design a new engine from the ground-up, or from a different game?

TF 2 will ship with a new engine.
Well then, isn't that interesting!?! The ShugaShack is trying to get official word on what this means (as are we here at planetfortress, so either way, check back for the latest word on what this truly means), new engine or just referring to a heavily modified Half-Life (which is really a heavily modified Quake) one.

Thanks to Bill, & Brandon for the news tip!

    [20:31 PST - By Slick]
Yes, it's a bit late, and I need my sleep so I'm going to go with a bullet list style to get caught up on all the wonderful news that has been sent into us:

  • On Monday, EwL (Encounters With Llamas) was updated with numerous stories, one-liners, pictures and for those who enjoy Invicjam, invicjam3 has been released..

  • The MacQ3Fleague (Now a cross-platform league) already has 7 clans signed up, but still has 3-4 spots left for clans that want to participate. It's expected to begin in June, you can get further details at http://www.macfrag.com/.

  • Joe has created a funky flash of the TFC sniper dot, it's pretty humors and a small download. And I give it the "Slick Seal of Approval®" (Every time I say that I still think it's sick) -- A hell of a lot better than all those "whassup" video's going around (not that they are bad, just way overdone).

    Radium closes up shop
    [19:34 PST - By DieHard]
All good things come to an end, last night at 11:59pm
radium updated his page for the last time. Loading up his site you can read his farewell message to the dedicated fans. As you may or may not know, radium now works for GSI running fileplanet which hosts all the files from all the planet sites.

    UnrealFortress News
    [20:08 PST - By Slick]
Haven't posted much about these guys in a while, so the message they sent is great to get those of you UT players who are interested in TF for it acquainted. Did someone say screenshots? They've got 'em, right at
http://www.unrealfortress.com/ plenty of new ones too. In other news:
We've added two new modellers, Zentek and Immy. We're featured in the June 2000 issue of the British gaming magazine PC Zone, and we've recently been interviewed at these three gaming sites:

  • Catacombs
  • Gamez-a-poppin

    Until the
TF Map Complex and a new-to-be-hosted-site get on their feet here at PlanetFortress (again in the case of the TFMC) I'll still pump out what I find to be interested map news, and this one just happens to stoke my furnace. It's a map by Zouave, in a somewhat hunted style, it'll be better if I avoid messing with the gameplay explanation and just let Zouave do it:
It is with great pleasure I write to announce the completion and release of my hunted style map, Renegade. The premise of the map is casts the prez in the role of a GMan, called in to eliminate his predecessor who has apparently lost control of the situation at the Black Mesa Research Facility. The original GMan has let one rampaging scientist interfere with the experiment and is recklessly throwing away the lives of government soldiers, and the prez has orders to stop him. But, like all things in the Half-Life world, it couldn't be easy. Somehow he found out a replacement was coming... On the way in, GMan/Prez's Osprey is shot down and crashes just outside the Black Mesa Training Course. As luck would have it, patriotic soldiers have agreed to get him to his goal on the other side of the dam. Meanwhile, soldiers loyal to the original GMan have taken arms and will go to any length to stop him.

The map may be downloaded from the Drunken Coon Productions website, or from my own website.

Screenshots of the map are available here.

This map was very well received in Beta testing, and I hope people will enjoy it.

    - Zouave
It's a sweet looking map, I give it my seal of approval (just so you know, I'm currently downloading, so I'm yet to really see it, but the screens/gameplay description are promising, so decide for yourself.)

    TFC 1.5 info
    [00:01 PST - By DieHard]
Rainy days means rainy day news. (Actually I can say anything I want here because I got info on the upcoming patch.) I got a pretty good reply from Valve on the upcoming patch. So, here is what Robin said to me:
"The starting hand grenade (type 1) grenade count for all classes has been dropped to 2, if it wasn't 2 or less already. Note that it's just the starting count, not the maximum carryable. This was done for a few reasons. We wanted to reduce the amount of grenades being thrown around. We also felt that everyone will be more effective with grenades now that we have a grenade timer built in. We also wanted to give the map more control over the number of grenades being used, and the easiest way to do that is to reduce the starting number, and let the map decide how many it wants to give them in the respawn rooms."
So do you like snowplows? If you do, I could have more info at a later date. =)
