How to Use this Tutorial GPS is a complex technology but understanding it can be quite easy if you take it one step at a time. This tutorial is designed to give you a good basic understanding of the principles behind GPS without loading you down with too much technical detail. For those details see the reference links in our GPS Guide.

We recommend that you follow the tutorial in the order it's presented, especially the "How GPS works" section. In that section the logic of the explanation develops one step at a time. Since we're trying to discourage you from deviating from a linear path through the tutorial any links you encounter will bring up an extra information window that only leads back to the tutorial. That way you won't get lost.

All About GPS

Why flying today isn't free. As kids didn't we all want to be airline pilots? What a job. You get up in the morning, jump into your plane and take your passengers on a wild trip to some cool destination. Flying free as a bird. Swooping over things that catch your eye. Exploring the world.

Unfortunately that's not how it works. Pilots today pick from a very limited set of routes and altitudes. So they don't have very much more freedom than the captains on the submarines at Disneyland.
