Controlling agricultural and construction vehicles in zero visibility in California
Stanford University's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics built a precision control system for driving heavy equipment that uses a simple Trimble GPS receiver as the only sensor of vehicle position and attitude. Researchers can now safely and cost-effectively measure a vehicle's position to within a few centimeters and determine its attitude to within 0.1 degree -- even in zero visibility.
Such a system makes it possible to use driverless vehicles to plow snow-covered runways, apply hazardous pesticides, tirelessly harvest crops, clear landmines, clean up toxic wastes, and perform countless other tedious and dangerous tasks safer and more effectively. |
