Sega Fondles the Boy Next Door

Our favorite game company solidifies details on its journey into Hong Kong.

February 28, 2000

Looking for a slice of that fat Internet cake, Sega Enterprises Ltd. today solidified details on its previously announced captial tie-up with Cheon Ming Holdings Ltd., which is a printing company listed in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

As you may imagine, Sega has little interest in printing anything. Instead, their sites are more fully set on -- you guessed it -- total world domination. Sega views the company as a steppingstone for development of the Internet game business in Asia. Sega isn't the first to pull such a maneuver over in Hong Kong however, as buying into a seemingly unrelated company allows Sega to begin from a pre-laid foundation in their Asian Internet efforts rather than starting totally from scratch.

"We will develop the Internet-game business in Japan, the rest of Asia, the U.S. and Europe," Sega President Shoichiro Irimajiri said at a press conference announcing the deal. Strong words . . . now can we get some lag-free internet gaming in America, please?

-- Matt White once controlled the world, but gave it all up for the love of a girl.
