Me Colin like the Takenobu.

AOU 2000: Sega Rocks the Competition

For the grand finale, Sega takes AOU show goers on a harmony joyride with Takenobu Mitsuyoshi.

February 28, 2000

If you've ever played a Sega game, chances are good you've heard something written by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi . As the head of the Sega Sound Team, Mitsuyoshi has worked on dozens of projects, supplying Saturn and Dreamcast games with kick-ass musical scores. He's also lent his voice to a number of games: he's the voice of Virtua Fighter's shadowy ninja Kage -- and do you remember the guy singing Blue Blue Skies in Daytona USA? Takenobu's your man.

It just so happens that Mitsuyoshi's got a fanatical fan base in Japan (myself included), and Sega opts to finish each TGS or AOU with a musical finale from The Man himself (and Kenji Eno on backup pianos, if he's in town). This year was no different, as Takenobu took to the stage solo to rock the hell out of everyone present.

Mitsuyoshi strutted his vocal talents, performing renditions of songs from the Virtua Fighter series (fun fact: the music in Jacky's VF3 stage has lyrics). By the second song, the crowd was on its feet, hooting and cheering Mitsuyoshi's every move. After the Sega booth girls ran on stage and started dancing, Mitsuyoshi wound things up with the theme from the Virtua Fighter anime. The crowd was invited to sing along - and, uh, I'm sorry to say that I knew the lyrics. I'm such a fanboy.

Check out the video files below for pure Sega-Inspired Vocal Bliss. And if anyone's got a spare version of the original Daytona soundtrack, I, uh . . . I wouldn't be interested. Pay no attention to the email link, okay?
