Today in N-Query: Resident Evil load times, Perfect Dark, 64DD and the 4MB Expansion Pak.

Doors.

I was wondering if Resident Evil 2 is going to have those "Nifty" door scenes that I "love" so much. The reason for this question is that I know Resident on the PlayStation had the door scenes so that the system could load. The N64 has all of the information it needs all of the time so it wouldn't have to load. So, is Capcom trying to make the game such a perfect port that they will include the door and stair scenes anyway? Or do they have to include them so the files in the game can decompress? (Because I know that they are compressing allot of things in the game) If it does have the scenes I hope they are sped up a bit.

Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time and effort!
Blake Pro

The doorway load animations are still present in the Nintendo 64 incarnation of the game. According to early reports from developer Angel Studios, these scenes are absolutely not necessary in the cartridge version, but Capcom wanted to keep them anyway. Sorry.

Blade Runner.

I don't expect you to post this, I just hope you can answer my question before I fall on the floor wrything in pain due to an overheated brain. I remember reading an article on your site about Perfect Dark. In that article you compared the game to a certain Sci-Fi movie (specifically the flying cars portion of the game). I wanted to rent the movie and check it out, but I can't find the article nor can I find the comparison in your preview. Please respond before I die.
Joe

We've compared Perfect Dark's opening sequence to the movie Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford. You should definitely check the film out as it's one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

64DD.

It appears Nintendo is really serious about the 64DD and would like to really establish it there. RARE would be great contributor to this cause. So my question, does RARE have any top-secret projects in development for the 64DD? Also, I read earlier today on FGNonline that Miyamoto once again commented on the viability of the 64DD and Ura-Zelda outside of Japan. What is your take on that possibility? And if everyone says it isn't arriving in the west, why do Nintendo's elite keep hinting at a possible release of the add-on? Something fishy is going on if you ask me!

I seriously doubt that Rare is bothering with the 64DD, especially since we know that the software house already has Dolphin development kits. Thinking back many centuries ago, though, I can recall that Donkey Kong 64 had been seen on Japanese release lists as a 64DD title. We reported it. Now, of course, we know that it's coming out on cartridge, but it's still rather interesting that DK64 is the only Rare game to require the 4MB Expansion Pak to run. The 64DD, as you know, has always been scheduled to ship with an extra 4MBs. Could Rare have really been developing with the 64DD in mind only to switch to cartridge or is it just a coincidence?

As far as the 64DD being released outside of Japan, I don't think it'll happen. Miyamoto's latest comments seem more optimistic, but they're hardly official.

4MBs.

Hey Matt,
I was wondering if, when you put in the 4MB expansion Pak for a game, and then decide to play another game instead, do we have to take out the expansion pak for it to work? For example you put it in to play DK64 play, and then you feel like playing Mario Kart 64. Then do you have to put in the Jumper Pak? PLEASE POST THIS! Thanks.

No, you should be okay playing any games with the 4MB Expansion Pak. I have received some reader e-mails that complained of Space Station: Silicon Valley locking up with the additional RAM, but this seems to be an isolated incident.

Gold.

I own a gold audio cd, and the gold on it does improves its overall sound quality. I was wondering if gold cds would improve the quality of a game, and if it is possible to make gold dvds.

Yes. It's a well documented fact that the color gold can often improve the quality of the product it appears on. The limited edition gold cart Zelda 64, for example, featured a longer, more enjoyable version of the game. Gray cart owners were simply out of luck.

Real answer: Gold CDs have no bearing on the quality of a game.

Connection.

If I import a 64DD, could I use my current ISP to connect to the Internet with it, or would I have to call overseas through Nintendo's service?
Brak Face

You'll have to dial Nintendo's Japanese number. Anticipate hefty phone bills.
