Dark Forces III: Jar-Jar Unleashed

Episode I's early popularity earns him a place in Star Wars line-up

April 1, 1999

While it's far too early to confirm the rumors, it looks like LucasArts is planning on continuing their ultra popular Dark Forces series with a third title that will be based on the upcoming Episode I film. The new game, which will be called Dark Forces III: Jar-Jar Unleashed, will take action fans on a first-person romp that will range from the sandy dunes of Tatooine, into the twisted labyrinth of Mos Espa, and eventually into the depths of space.

The real twist here is that players will take on the role of Jar-Jar, an alien character whose lovable demeanor and amusing voice has earned him the star role in the upcoming title. "Everyone just loves Jar-Jar," said the industry insider who gave us the heads-up on this story. "Even though no one has actually seen the movie yet, Jar-Jar's one line spot in the movie trailer has made him an overnight success."

Our source went on to tell us that unlike earlier titles, Dark Forces III will feature weapons and power-ups that are designed to amuse and delight opponents rather than killing them. Early in the game Jar-Jar will only have his Grover-inhales-helium voice and giant floppy ears to get him out of trouble. As the game progresses he'll get access to such enemy distracting objects as loveable Star Wars Beanie Babies, collectible Star Wars action figures, and slumber-inducing Star Wars sheets and pillow cases.

"We think Jar-Jar could be the biggest action hero since Winnie-the-Pooh," our source revealed. "His natural charm and slightly irritating voice are sure to keep gamers on the edge of their seats."

Not every one is so pleased about Jar-Jar's rise to fame. "His grammar and annunciation are simply terrible," said Dr. Joseph Logos, Director of Child Development at Brisbane's prestigious Center for Bizarre Vocal Patterns. "The example he is setting for children is not only bad, but potentially damaging. We've already got an entire generation of speakers who have been irreparably scarred by the verb-at-the-end speaking style of Yoda. Do we really need an alien who doesn't use the verb to be and can't put the -ing on the end of gerunds? I'd like to suggest the idea of an alien who speaks with absolutely perfect English to Mr. Lucas. Perhaps as a gimmick he could recite the alphabet slowly and clearly every now and then."

Such minor complaints aside, most gaming fans are excited by the upcoming release. "I was really getting sick and tired of fast-paced action games," said one local fan. "I mean, how interesting is it really to play a giant multi-player deathmatch with loads of different weapons and armor? This game is going to totally blow away stupid games like Unreal Tournament and Team Fortress 2. I can't wait 'til I get my hands on some of those Beanie Babies."

It's obviously far too soon to tell how well the game will do, but its success is not guaranteed. Both Beelzebub's Ice Racing and Mammon's Snowmobile Racing will be released on the same day as Dark Forces III: Jar-Jar Unleashed. Keep checking the future pages of IGNPC for more info on how this exciting sales war will play out.
