What?!? Can it be?!? An updated Q&A section?!?

Getting Boney for Oni

What's up with Oni, do ya'll have any information on it? I was hoping for you to have another preview in the near future. The game looks too cool!

-- 9-Cyph

Funny you should ask that. I just got off the phone with the Bungie guys to try to get a build of Oni. Unfortunately, I came up snake-eyes. We get nothing yet, but I'm trying my damndest to get my hands on a playable version. I promise I'll do a more in-depth preview after I can actually play the game a bit.

-- Tal

A Whole Lotta Release Dates Going On

I've really been waiting for Rogue Spear. Any word on when it's coming out?

-- Dan Petersen

Look for it around the 22nd of this month, Dan.

When is Jane's USAF flight sim going to come out?

--Shun

Supposed to be the middle of October.

Hey Tal. I have been all hyped over getting Cutthroats. But, everytime I keep checking the site, it said release of Sept. 14. Then I check, and it says Sept.17. Is this going to keep getting pushed back like The Phantom Menace for Playstation? Can you tell me if they are going to keep pushing it back? Also, have you heard anything on the release of Age of Empires Age of Kings? I can't wait for that game either.

Thanks in advance

-- Chris

What can I say? Determining PC release dates is a mysterious and inexact science, Chris. The word from Eidos is that Cutthroats should be out this week. Same story with Age of Kings. It should be out within a week or so.

Listen is there a solid release date of NHL 2000? When are you going to have a preview for it?

-- Johnny

It was just released. We got our copy in today. I'll be grabbing that one ... yoink. No preview, but look for the full review in a week or so.

Hi, what is Warcrat 3's release date it says sep 8th 99' but its the 10th and its not out yet.

-- Nate

Warcraft III isn't supposed to be released until late next year. Me thinks you're confusing the day the preview was posted with the release date.

Is Tiberium Sun ever going to be released? I need it.

-- Grumpy

Obviously that's not all you need. First off, it's Tiberian ... Tiberian! Second, it's been out for a couple of weeks. Maybe you need to get out of the house more, Grumps.

-- Tal

One If By Land, Two If By Me

I have a computer with a Celeron 366mhz in it w/ 32MB of RAM and a built-in video AGP card with 4MB of RAM and I want to upgrade it. Would you suggest getting more RAM or a 3D accelerator card? I only have enough to do one. If a 3D card, which one ($99-$150 price range)? I really would appreciate your expert advice.

-- Chris

Well, my expert advice would be to get both. You're really sacrificing performance by not having at least 64MB of RAM and a 3D accelerator. But, if you can only afford one, I'd go with the 3D card. The improvement will be dramatic and, while only a handful of games out there require 64 MB of RAM, several require a 3D card. And you're certainly going to see a graphical improvement in most of your games with a 3D accelerator. My favorite for the money is still the 3dfx line. People argue that the TNT2 looks better, but I'm a fan of the 3dfx Voodoo3s because of their compatibility and raw speed. You can find Voodoo3 2000s for as low as $80 at some online retail outlets, and the 3000s for around $100. Check out pricewatch.com for the best hardware prices on the Web. And heck, if you can afford to drop $150, get a V3 2000 and drop another 32MB of RAM in your system. You should be able to get both for $150, with some change to spare.

Just Shoot Me

I read on IGNPC a few months ago about a light gun for the PC. Has it come out yet? If so, how much is it and where can I get one?

-- MoxyBite

You know, supposedly they're released, but I haven't personally seen them out at stores yet. I know Act Labs is selling them directly for $89.99. The package comes with two guns, a hand-held controller, and a convenient base to rest the guns in. To order one or just for some more hinkfo on the gun system, go to the Act-Labs GS website. The webpage even hints at MODs being developed for some of the exisiting big name first-person shooters. Can you imagine playing Half-Life with a light gun!

An Aspiring Director

Hey Tal --

We all know you still got jet lag but please can you answer me this question? I'll really need to know if I'll be able to do this or not because it'll help in one of my school assignments. You know how game companies release short video clips (in avi or mpeg format etc.) of in game playing? How do they do that? Like how to capture part of what you're playing and record it as a avi? They use some kinda program or anything? I'll really need to know if I can do this or not and I'll really appreciate it if you look it up for me =) Thanks a lot Tal, U Da Best. Oh and make the response funny if possible hehe =)

-- The High School Game Nut

I'm too tired to be flipped on like a lightswitch for your amusement, THEGN. What am I, a freaking' court Jester or something? You want me to pull some cross-dressing Sasquatch story out of my a$$ or something? Perhaps you'd like me to do a little dance and song a little song while I'm at it. Oh sure, laugh it up now, pretty-boy. Cause by the time you're graduating from high school and working at some dead-end job at McDonald's I'm going to be laughing all the way to the bank ... and the only skills I posses is a quick-click index finger and good eye-hand coordination. Think about it.

Oh gosh. Sorry, I don't know what came over me. Whew! Take some calm, relaxing breaths, Tal. Think happy thoughts ... happy thoughts. Oh yeah, there are those cute little Teletubbies. Hey Dipsy. Howdy Laa-Laa. I love your handbag, Tinky Winky. OK, that's better. Now on to your question:

There are a couple of ways you can record video from your computer. First you can take the direct approach. You can run the source of one video card into a video capture card on another computer. While this way is pretty easy and almost always works, you need two computers to do it. Another a more cost effective way is by using a software program to capture the onscreen action while you're playing. One such program I know of is HyperCam. It will capture AVIs directly from your video signal. You can even download a trial copy at www.hyperionics.com.
