Look! Realistic breasts! In a Gainax flick!
Otaku No Animeigo

Are you ready to see one of Gainax's funniest efforts on DVD?

November 8, 1999

While anime fans have come to recognize classic Gainax tropes as the "Gunbuster Bounce" and "excessive fan service," we've always Gainax's ability to make fun of itself. Although the animation company has produced such classics as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gunbuster, and Wings of Honneamise, one of our favorites has always been Otaku no Video, Gainax's tribute to itself and to the Japanese fan community.

Virtually unknown by fans today, Animeigo's Otaku no Video/More Otaku no Video is a classic by old school fans, and rightfully so. It's a slightly fictionalized history of the founding of Gainax, interspersed with interviews with "real" otakus (fans). While still in print, its age and relatively serious subject matter render it less palatable to the modern anime viewer.

Still, if you didn't know about it before or didn't want to pick it up on video, you might want to consider the DVD, announced by Animeigo just recently. The DVD will be similar to Gainax's Japanese Otaku no Video release next year, which means you'll get both parts plus some extras on one disc. Maybe it's not one your highest priorities, but with Animeigo steadily converting its entire library to DVD, it's one you don't want to miss.

What's your favorite Gainax anime? Gunbuster, Evangelion, Nadia: Secret of Blue Water, or Wings of Honneamise? E-mail us at letters@dailysci-fi.com and be sure to check in later for the responses. If you've got a question, e-mail the Bug-Eyed Monster and read its answers here.
