Time Machine Gets City of Angels Director
Brad Silberling will bring his sense of schmaltz to the movie adaptation.
November 8, 1999
The upcoming film adaptation of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine is all but set to go. Variety reports that director Brad Silberling, whose credits include City of Angels and the WB's Felicity, is in serious talks to direct.
This puts to rest rumors that Steven Spielberg was eyeing the project, though fans might have preferred Spielberg's penchant for the fantastic to Silberling's knack for sap. The film will be a co-production between Warner Bros. and DreamWorks, with a script by John Logan. The project starts production in summer 2000.
Though another adaptation of The Time Machine (another film version was mounted in 1960) may have seemed a perfect project for Spielberg, it's too early to say how this will turn out. We'll wait to see who ends up being in the thing (previous Silberling leading ladies Keri Russell or Meg Ryan, perhaps?) to cast judgement. We are, however, already worried about the schmaltz factor. We'd like it on the record now that we are whole-heartedly against the use of a Goo Goo Dolls ballad as the movie's theme song.
Is Silberling the man for the job, or will he muck things up? Ask a question about this story or send us your opinion on it, and be sure to check in later for the responses!
