Heavy Gear Cartoon

Popular computer game and pen-and-paper system to become animated series and Bandai toys.

November 8, 1999

Fans of Activision's Heavy Gear computer game franchise can look forward to seeing their favorite battling 'mechs on the small screen, as Sony Pictures Family Entertainment today announced a 40-episode deal making the game a cartoon.

"An animated series is the next natural step in extending the already popular Heavy Gear franchise," said Sander Schwartz, president of Sony's family entertainment division. "The new series provides another exciting vehicle for an established fan base to experience the thrill of Heavy Gear and with intriguing storylines, interesting characters and state-of-the-art animation."

Besides the computer game franchise, Heavy Gear was originally a pen-and-paper roleplaying game system created by Dream Pod 9, and that company is in fact the license holder that Sony dealt with.

"We are very pleased to be working with (Sony) to bring the Heavy Gear franchise to a wider audience," said Frank Malmberg of Dream Pod. "The story is both exciting and fresh, and the hundreds of thousands of fans of the games will now be able to enjoy Heavy Gear in a new format."

The animated series will be created in-house by Sony and will air in the Fall of 2000 on the Bohbot's kids network.

As part of the deal, toymaker Bandai America has been signed up to make Heavy Gear toys. Other merchandise planned includes clothes, electronics, gifts, and even food and novelties (!).
