Trek Fans to Paramount: We Want Sulu!
Fan group plans a campaign to replace Voyager with a spin-off starring George Takei.

With all the debate over who should have creative control of Star Trek, it's not surprising that fans are starting to take matters into their own hands.
Sci-Fi Wire reports that the International Federation of Trekkers is organizing a campaign around a Trek series they would like to see replace Voyager. The show is based on an idea from original cast member George Takei, and would feature the adventures of Captain Sulu (Takei) and the crew of the USS Excelsior. The show would be similar in look and feel to the first six Trek films.
"At this time, our plan is to basically bombard Paramount with mail," IFT president Russ Haslage told Sci-Fi Wire. "IFT has thousands of members around the world, and most have pledged their support to this mission. In addition, since this campaign is meant to represent all Star Trek fans, we hope to garner a great deal of help and support from the grassroots fans of the world." IFT also plans to enlist the aid of cast members of the original Trek, including Takei and Nichelle Nichols. Haslage said the campaign will launch later this month.
While we doubt that the almighty Paramount will bend to the whims of Trek fans, we wouldn't mind seeing the further adventures of a Sulu-commanded ship. Maybe it's the sentimentalist in us talking -- or maybe it's just the fact that Takei is one of the original cast members who hasn't done anything embarrassing since Trek. Unlike some people we know...
