Speaker: Warren Harris, Netscape Abstract: The Open JVM API is an extension to Netscape's Plug-In API that allows third-parties to replace Netscape's default implementation of the JavaTM Virtual Machine. This gives more flexibility to application developers, allowing them to use whatever Java VM makes the most sense for their application. This talk will center around how to integrate a Java VM with Communicator: additions to the Plug-In API, interaction with Communicator's layout and history mechanism, interaction with JavaScriptTM through LiveConnect, and AWT integration issues.

Abstract 1: Piloting Java technology-based solutions for business applications is an excellent method of "lowering the bar" for corporate business which are evaluating the viability of solutions. The advantages of pilot applications include modest up-front resource investments and small team structures. Although the basics of the pilot environment remain the same, different projects present different organizational challenges. This session will focus on the systems integration implications of leveraging the pilot project investment to deliver a full-scale system, and expanding the user community beyond the initial pilot team. It will also feature hardware and software solutions that highlight best practices in pilot implementation. Abstract 2: New consumer devices like CD library changers and advanced Digital TVs have far greater functional capabilities than today's mass-market CD players and TVs. But greater technical sophistication may be a disincentive to buy rather than an incentive, if consumers see these devices as difficult to use. We will discuss how a low-cost Java technology appliance can function as an intelligent remote controller, using Internet resources to provide users with an interface that is both simpler and more powerful than those currently available. As a case study, we will demonstrate a Java technology-based application for controlling a 200-CD player, which also allows users to browse the CD collection, play favorite sequences, and perform other tasks using the remote's graphical display.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Poona, India, and a Master's Degree from Northeastern University. Abstract: As Java technology has emerged as a valuable technology for enterprise business deployment, developers and end customers have occasionally had to choose between portability and performance. Until now, "portability" meant Java technology; "performance" meant something else. However, due to ongoing improvements in compiler technology, Java technology can incorporate the best virtues of compatibility and portability with the class of enterprise performance and scalability that business users demand. This talk will discuss compilation strategies to incorporate the best of native and dynamic alternatives, without sacrificing Java technology compatibility or requiring significant deployment effort.

Bob Pasker has been designing and developing networking, communications, transaction processing, and database products and applications for 20 years. He's managed the development of numerous award-winning technologies and leads the development for WebLogic's Tengah, the world's first pure Java application server. He holds a BA from San Francisco State University and an MA from Brown University. Jeff Littfin is Hewlett-Packard's chief technical strategist for Java development, and manages HP's long-term Java technology investments and technology developments. He has been with Hewlett-Packard for fifteen years. Abstract: This session will show how easy it is to build high-performance, distributed multitier applications using a secure, managable, Java technology application server framework that integrates the latest Java technology enterprise standards (e.g., JDBC, EJB, RMI, JNDI, messaging, and HTTP servlets). The session will describe when and how to use the technologies appropriately to gain the best performance. Also included in the session will be examples of mission-critical applications currently in production that use this framework.

Speaker: Carol Thompson began her HP career at HP Laboratories in 1982, working on the PA-RISC program in areas of architecture, object code translation, and optimization. She subsequently transferred to the product division, and has focused primarily on optimization, and architecture since that time. She holds a BS in physics from UC Davis, and an MS in computer science from Berkeley. Abstract: The evolution of programming languages, along with advances in the art and science of software design, presents ongoing challenges in achieving high performance. The IA-64 architecture was designed for high performance execution of the applications of the future, and therefore includes features which enhance Java technology performance. This session will discuss some of these features, and demonstrate their applicability to the Java application environment domain.

The presentation will focus on FJB's global IT infrastructure, its 3-tier client-server strategy that encompasses a Javatised client POS system for the Java platform linked to a repository host (retail/inventory system), and finally an enterprise-wide Executive Information System (data warehousing). A drill-down on FJB's POS system incorporating Java technology (aka "JSR") will be conducted with a glance at its functionality, interoperability and a future shift towards an NC (Network Computer) type POS.
