Java Commerce and Card Technologies
Speaker: Rinaldo Di Giorgio, Staff Engineer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Abstract: Java Card technology represents an entirely new platform for most Java technology developers, yet they will represent more devices in the marketplace by the year 2000 than most other computer platforms combined. This talk will provide a hands-on introduction to the development of Java Card applets. It will include an overview of how to architect the applet, how to construct the code, and how to compile and prepare for loading into a Java Card API.

In less than 1 year, it has been adopted by many major smartcard manufacturers, and is anticipated to be implemented in over 600 million cards, jewelry, and other devices by the year 2000. This talk will present an in-depth review of the current specification and architecture, as well as outline the future plans for Java Card platform products.

Speaker: Ron Kleinman, Software Architect, Sun Microsystems, Inc. Abstract: This 50 minute presentation describes the Java Point of Sale Terminal standard (JavaPOS) which is designed to deliver the promises of the Java client platform (portability, lower administration costs) to retail application developers. Of more general interest, JavaPOS incorporates additional Java APIs which will allow 100% Pure Java programs to access and control peripheral devices. The exploitation of this added functionality within the JavaPOS architecture will be discussed. Finally, some guidelines on how to extend these APIs to create foundations for banking ATMs, kiosks, and factory floor automation stations, as well as POS terminals, will be presented.
