Developing Applications for the PersonalJava Platform

Abstract: The volume of Internet-enabled consumer devices is growing rapidly, making it an attractive market for today's developers. The PersonalJava environment is the Java platform designed specifically for consumer devices - including Internet "web phones", set-top boxes, and mobile hand-held devices. Officially launched in December 1997, PersonalJava already has significant momentum in the marketplace, with leading real-time operating system (RTOS) vendors standardizing on this platform and over 24 licensees to date. The first consumer devices running the PersonalJava platform will appear on the market later this year.

This session is geared toward developers who are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity by writing applications for the PersonalJava platform. The presentation will cover tips, tricks, and potential pitfalls in developing software for this platform, including working within hardware constraints, user interface considerations, and development tools currently and soon-to-be-made available. From this presentation, developers should be able to quickly and easily begin their development efforts and get the most from their PersonalJava applications. Experienced as well as novice Java technology developers will benefit from this session.
