What is the
MicroPortal?
AltaVista's MicroPortal is a function of the
Free Access system that provides users with personalized
and constantly updated news headlines, weather, sports
scores and stock information. The MicroPortal can also
be used over your current Internet connection.
How do I use the
MicroPortal over my current Internet connection?
- To use the MicroPortal over your current connection,
click on the AltaVista icon on your desktop. Click
"Add" or "Modify."
- Under "Connect Using," select "TCP/IP
direct (LAN)" using the arrow. Click "Finish."
Click "Connect."
- Your navigation bar will be different from the one
that appears for Free Access users (see below).
How do I minimize the
MicroPortal when using it over my own Internet
connection?
Click on the minimize button in the upper left corner
to minimize the MicroPortal when using it over your
own Internet connection. You can then maximize it by
clicking on the same button.
How do I open the
MicroPortal while using Free Access?
Clicking on the right arrow button activates and de-activates
the MicroPortal. You can also right-click on the left
edge of the navigation bar and choose "Show MicroPortal."
How do I personalize the
MicroPortal?
If the MicroPortal window is open, click on the
rectangular Personalize button. This will open a web
page in your browser where you can customize the news,
stocks, weather, and sports information that appears in
the MicroPortal. If the MicroPortal window is closed,
click on the "+" button. In the ad window, click on the
"Personalize my MicroPortal" button, which will open the
same customization web page.
How do I read an article
about a headline I see in the MicroPortal?
Clicking on the headline will launch your browser and
display the entire article. Similarly, clicking on a
ticker symbol, a city, or a sports score will provide
more detailed information.
Does personalizing the MicroPortal
affect my AV Live settings?
Yes. When you customize the MicroPortal, you change
your AV Live settings.
Does personalizing AV Live
affect my MicroPortal settings?
Yes. When you change your AV Live settings, they will
be reflected in the MicroPortal window.
When I try to log in, a
window appears on my screen asking me to install
"avmicroportal data control." What should I do?
Click "Yes." The "avmicroportal data control"
installation is necessary to run the MicroPortal. It
must be downloaded to use AltaVista Free Access.
What do the little blue
arrows do in the MicroPortal window?
Clicking on the blue arrow scrolls through your
stocks, weather, and sports scores in the left
MicroPortal window. Clicking on the blue arrow scrolls
through the news headlines in the right MicroPortal
window.
